President's Report

Whew, what a start to 2017.  So much is going on, this newsletter will probably be ‘old’ by the time you read it.

As I write this, House Speaker Paul Ryan has just postponed the scheduled vote to repeal Obamacare and replace it with the American Health Care Act.  So the negotiations continue and who knows what is going to happen?  As always, our legislative team in Washington D.C. will keep us up to date, as they have been and will continue to be ‘at the table’ during these discussions.

Speaking of Washington D.C., a group of 20 of your fellow members trekked to our nation’s Capitol last month to attend this year’s Capitol Conference.  The conference set a new record for attendance, so that goes to show how important it is for us as a federation to continue the communication efforts with our elected officials.

We are part of Region 4, and we were the ONLY region to have 100% HUPAC contributors for all those in attendance!  (You should have seen Mike Gray work the crowd to get those final two from Wisconsin to enroll!)

Even with a big snow storm on February 24, we had nearly full attendance at the 4-Hour LTC refresher course in Omaha, and 132 brave souls showed up for the bowling event!  It was a huge success.  And on March 1, we had another crowd of 100+ in attendance in Lincoln for three hours of CE with our good friend from Iowa, the always entertaining Jesse Patton.

Upcoming events include Omaha’s Awards program (with two hours of CE) on March 29 -- and then of course the Nebraska Insurance Leaders Forum on April 20-21 at the La Vista Embassy Suites. You won’t want to miss the GREAT speakers we have lined up, including a 3-hour Ethics class moderated by Coach Tom Osborne.

Hang in there, things are only going to get more interesting as the year progresses!

American employers pay more in health care costs than employers in any other country in the world. Markups and inconsistent pricing by health care providers and insurance companies contribute to these issues and have continued to escalate in the last few years. Working with self-funded employer groups to understand can help control employee health care costs.  Assisting with plan design and establishing limits for payment of medical claims can correct reimbursements to correlate with the providers’ actual cost of services. Developing this rational and disciplined approach to health care results in tremendous savings self-funded employers. Proven cost-plus methodologies save these plans conservatively $150,000 per 100 employees that are on the plan.  Or another way to view this is a health plan receives on average about a 25% - 30% decrease of their overall medical expenses for the first year on the program and then maintaining that through the life of the program.  Providing a reasonable and fair reimbursement establishes a win-win scenario for all.

The CE progras will provide two hours of HEALTH CEUs for Nebraska & Iowa.
